6 - Botanical Garden and Tijuca Rain Forest / Jd Botânico e Floresta da Tijuca

English: Tijuca Forest is a tropical rainforest right in the heart of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is claimed to be the world's largest urban forest, covering some 32 km² (12.4 mi²), although there are sources assigning this title to the urban forest of Johannesburg, South Africa, where between 6 and 9.5 million trees were planted. You will walk with an  expert guide in the forest.
 
 Rio de Janeiro's Jardim Botanico (Botanical Garden) was created in 1808 by then Prince Regent Dom João VI (1767 - 1826), who later became the 17th King of Portugal. The garden officially opened in 1822, just a few years before Dom João's death. Originally, the Jardim Botanico was designed to cultivate spices found in the West Indies. Plants and trees were brought here from all over the tropics. Nowadays it has an unique park due to its variety of species including, but not limited to the Imperial Palm Trees, giant water lilies (Victorias-Regias), and beautiful Red Wood trees (Pau Brasil). Also, in its famous greenhouse, there are more than 500 species of orchids.

O Jardim Botânico foi fundado em 1808 por Dom João VI,  é um importante ponto turístico da cidade e amplamente visitado por pesquisadores que estudam as centenas de espécies que o habitam. Com área total de 137 hectares, sendo 54 de área cultivada, o Jardim Botânico abriga coleções raras de bromélias e orquídeas, além de árvores centenárias, plantas exóticas e vários monumentos.
